Morgan Border had long dreamed of walking the runway in a fashion show, but never imagined that dream would come true. That is, until earlier this month when she strutted in high heels and a formal dress at famed New York Fashion Week.
Border, a St. Edmond High School graduate and current Iowa Central Community College nursing student, was asked by GlamourGirl Boutique to walk in the hiTECHMODA fashion show.
GlamourGirl Boutique saw Border when she won the Nation of the States U.S. Miss pageant earlier this year.
“This was a once- in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I took it,” said Border. “I loved the show. It was like the fashion shows you see on TV. There was music, photography at the end of the aisle, and people surrounding the aisles. We got our hair and makeup done as well, as part of the show.”
Border, who currently works as a patient care tech at UnityPoint Health — Trinity Regional Medical Center and hopes to earn her registered nurse degree, said the experience was not only a dream come true, but also proved that hard work and dedication pay off in the long run.
“I never thought this would ever happen, especially to someone like me,” said Border. “I always thought it would be really fun to be able to walk in Fashion Week, but I knew it wasn’t going to be available for me. ‘Not tall enough.’ ‘Not skinny enough.’ They always said that stuff when I applied to walk for other shows. This goes to prove you can do anything you set your mind to and anything is possible.”
Border traveled to New York City with her mother, Sheila; sister, Brooklin; and a friend. In addition to attending New York Fashion Week, they also attended three Broadway musicals, toured the Museum of Modern Art, Rockefeller Center, Times Square, the Brooklyn Bridge, 9/11 Memorial, and walked around the city.
“The experience was astonishing,” said Border. “I was able to do so much just by accepting an offer to model for a day during New York Fashion Week. Something I’ve always dreamed of doing was finally coming true. I am really grateful for the opportunity that I was given and will forever cherish it.”
