MAYFIELD — For the Mayfield girls’ basketball team, the championship game of the Mayfield Holiday Tournament represented an opportunity to hand Schoharie its first loss.
The Panthers took advantage, posting a 51-33 victory over the previously unbeaten Indians on Wednesday.
“I’m proud of our effort tonight,” Mayfield coach Brian Moore said.
Adriana Yuret led Mayfield with 14 points, while Cloey Dopp and Brooke Iannuzzi each had 10 points. Kelsey Meca added nine points for the Panthers and Katarina Agerter added six points.
“We spread the wealth tonight,” Moore said. “Everybody played and everybody scored. It was a team win.”
Jessica Meade paced Schoharie with 17 points and Chloe Towle had seven.
Schoharie reached the title game with a 50-38 victory over Northville in Tuesday’s first round, while Mayfield topped Galway in the other first-round contest, 50-11.
“We have three girls on vacation,” Schoharie coach Eric Croote said. “I didn’t think missing them would be that big of a deal, but it’s tough to play back-to-back games with just seven players.”
The Indians started the game by scoring the first six points before the Panthers closed the first quarter with a 12-2 surge.
Yuret scored six first-quarter points for Mayfield.
The Panthers extended their lead to 10 points with a 9-2 burst to open the second quarter to take a 21-11 lead.
Schoharie was able to close to within 29-25 at the half as Meade scored eight points in the quarter.
After the break, Mayfield used its defense to pull away allowing just two second-half field goals and outscoring the Indians 22-8.
“Defense has been our staple this year,” Moore said. “I thought we did a good job again tonight.”
The Panthers got points from five different players in the third quarter as they opened up a 40-27 lead.
“We only had six girls available tonight, but the six we had all stepped up and played their hearts out,” Moore said.
Mayfield closed out the victory by outscoring the Indians 11-6 over the final eight minutes.
Mayfield (8-2 overall) is slated to host Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons in a WAC contest on Jan. 7 at 7 p.m.
Schoharie (8-1 overall) is scheduled to travel to Galway next Wednesday for a Western Athletic Conference contest at 7 p.m.
“I’ve got a good group of girls,” Croote said. “We’re going to use this as a learning experience.”
Dopp was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, while Yuret and Meca were named to the all-tournament team. Abby Fagnani and Meade were named to the all-tourney team for Schoharie.
In the consolation game, Northville posted a 59-37 victory over Galway.
Hailey Monroe scored 25 points to lead the Falcons, who improved to 2-5 overall.
Madalyn Biche finished with 15 points for Northville and Kaelin Thompson added 10.
Julia Reedy finished with 17 points to pace Galway (2-6 overall), while Emma Jordan and Hannah French each had eight points.
Reedy and Monroe were named to the all-tournament team.
Galway is slated to host Schoharie on Wednesday in a Western Athletic Conference contest at 7 p.m., while Northville is slated to travel to North Warren on Monday for a non-league contest at 5:30 p.m.
