THE WOODLANDS, TX — Road Project Updates
Storm sewer work set to start on Birnham Woods Drive widening project
Contractor Main Lane Industries will start preparing the right of way and installing storm sewer along certain stretches of the Birnham Woods Drive widening project.
The project contract was awarded in mid-January to Main Lane Industries in the amount of $2,989,756.42. The project is contracted for 420 calendar days.
Scope: The project will widen Birnham Woods Drive from a two-lane asphalt road to a four-lane asphalt road with roadside ditches between Waterbend Cove and Trophy Ridge. It also will widen Birnham Woods Drive from a two-lane concrete road to a four-lane concrete road with curb and gutter and underground drainage from Trophy Ridge to Rayford Road.
Once completed, there will be two lanes plus a left-turn lane in each direction on Birnham Woods Drive at the intersections with Waterbend Cove and Lexington Boulevard.
Bridge work ongoing on Gosling Road project
Project update: Contractor NBG Constructors continues work on the new bridge over Spring Creek as part of the Gosling Road widening project. The focus will be on the south side of the creek in the coming weeks.
The project is a joint effort, with Montgomery County Precinct 3 Commissioner James Noackâs office funding $4 million and Harris County Precinct 4 Commissioner Jack Cagleâs office funding the remaining $4.2 million of the $8.2 million project.
The project falls within the boundaries of The Woodlands Township on both sides of the county line.
Scope of project: The project will widen Gosling Road to a full four-lane boulevard between Creekside Forest Drive in Harris County and Gatewood Reserve Lane on the north side of the project in Montgomery County. It will result in two 12-foot lanes in each direction. The road pavement will be 10-inch jointed reinforced concrete with 8-inch stabilized subgrade.
The widening includes the construction of a 1,817-foot bridge crossing over Spring Creek for the two new southbound lanes. The existing bridge lanes will become the two northbound lanes. The sidewalk and existing 8-foot shoulder along the northbound side will remain. The new southbound bridge will have a safety shoulder for motorists to access in case of vehicle breakdown.
Northbound Gosling Road at the intersection with Creekside Forest Drive will be restriped to allow two through lanes of traffic and a left-turn lane.
The additional detention will be constructed on the north side of the project and drain into Spring Creek.
The construction project started in December 2021 and is estimated to take 14-15 months to complete.
Rayford Road-Birnham Woods Drive widening and signalization project:
Traffic signals installed at Rayford-Birnham Woods Drive intersection
Project Update: Contractor Third Coast has completed construction of the traffic signals at the Rayford Road-Birnham Woods Drive intersection. The signals are expected to be up and running this month.
Recently installed traffic signals already are operating at the Rayford Road intersections with Harmony Woods/Allegro Bend Boulevard, Harmony Creek/Harmony Forest Boulevard and Spring Trails Park.
Traffic signals replace all-way stops at these intersections:
⢠Rayford Road and Birnham Woods Drive
⢠Rayford Road and Harmony Woods/Allegro Bend Boulevard
⢠Rayford Road and Spring Trails Park Drive
⢠Rayford Road and Harmony Creek/Harmony Forest Boulevard
Pedestrian signal poles and crosswalks have been included as part of the intersection signalization.
Road construction on the Rayford Road-Birnham Woods Drive widening, intersection improvement and signalization project was completed in early January.
Scope of project: The project widened Rayford Road to four lanes from approximately 40 feet east of Waterbend Cove to approximately 400 feet east of Birnham Woods Drive. A new concrete roadway was constructed on the south side of the existing Rayford Road lanes to create the two new eastbound lanes. The existing road now makes up the two westbound lanes along that stretch. Left-turn lanes also were added for eastbound and westbound traffic at most intersections.
The construction included a new bridge for eastbound Rayford Road traffic just east of Spring Trails Park Drive.
The project also involved widening Birnham Woods Drive to four lanes from approximately 600 feet north of Rayford Road to approximately 600 feet south of Rayford Road. All four Rayford Road-Birnham Woods Drive intersection approaches now have a dedicated left-turn lane.
Kuykendahl Road widening project:
Roadside ditch grading, hydroseeding on tap for Kuykendahl Road
Project Update: Road-widening construction was completed in January for the Kuykendahl Road widening and bridge project from north of Lake Woodlands Drive to south of Bay Branch Drive.
The contractor will be returning soon to complete ditch-grading work, hydroseed and finish cleanup.
The bridge rails along the southbound lanes of Kuykendahl Road also were recently repainted.
Scope of project: The project widened Kuykendahl Road from a two-lane half boulevard to a four-lane full boulevard from north of Lake Woodlands Drive to south of Bay Branch Drive.
Project design included construction of two 12-foot-wide northbound vehicle lanes from north of Lake Woodlands Drive to south of Bay Branch Drive with an 8-foot-wide outside shoulder along the new northbound lanes. A new bridge was constructed over Bear Branch for the northbound lanes that has a walkway, mirroring the existing bridge.

The two existing lanes are now the southbound lanes.
