AUGUSTA, Ga. — A star-studded leaderboard and patron-filled course have the 2022 Masters already reaching a fever pitch as Round 2 action begins Friday. Sung-jae Im tops that board at 5 under after a stellar first 18 holes, but his lead is minuscule with Cameron Smith, former champions Danny Willett and Dustin Johnson, Joaquín Niemann and Scottie Scheffler among those nipping at his heels as the second day of action begins.
Still, it’s Tiger Woods who is drawing most of the air out of the atmosphere at Augusta National. Playing his first event in 17 months — and just 14 months removed from nearly losing his leg — Woods shot the most remarkable 71 in Masters history to sit T11 and just four shots back of Im. Tiger is not only likely to make the cut barring disaster Friday, he may well be in contention to win his sixth green jacket entering the weekend. All of it makes for a must-watch second round that should be thrilling from sunrise to sunset on Friday.

We were discussing at lunch today how difficult this week is going to be. If you shoot four 70s at this event, you’ll probably win. We’ve seen Masters like this before — just all-out wars against the weather and your mind — and they’re normally fascinating but might not produce a big-name champion. Sam Snead Jack Burke, Jr. and Zach Johnson have all won this tournament at 1 over par. I don’t think that’s what we’re looking at this weekend, but if it gets windy enough, it could come into play.

Leaderboard movement
Lot of moving pieces in Round 2 as the conditions continue to shake things up. Round 1 leader Sungjae Im is now one back of leader Cameron Smith, who tees off at 1:30 p.m. ET, after bogeys at 10 and 12 moved him to 2 over on the day and 3 under for the tournament.
Charl Schwartzel is 3 under on the round and 3 under on the tournament, putting him one off Smith’s lead.
Meanwhile, Brooks Koepka, Rory McIlroy both EVEN today; Dustin Johnson 1 over; Collin Morikawa 2 under.

Tiger Woods is scheduled to tee off in just under a half-hour at 1:41 p.m. ET.
Woods will be in a two-some with Joaquin Niemann after the third of their group, Louis Oosthuizen, withdrew Friday morning due to an injury.
Could be a real test for Woods, who remember: is still rehabbing from a significant car crash in early 2021. He had a noticeable hitch in his gait Thursday that worsened throughout the day. If he’s going to be doing more standing around and waiting than normal, can he stay loose?

Tiger Woods set for Round 2 after strong opening round
After a 1-under 71 on Thursday, Tiger Woods is set to go off as one of the last groups Friday with a 1:41 p.m. tee time. Woods’ 71 was among the most impressive in Masters history, Kyle Porter wrote on Thursday, given all he’s had to overcome just to be in the field this week. We’ll see if he can keep that pace up. Making the weekend cut would be a huge accomplishment.

Birdies at 8 and 9 has Collin Morikawa into the red at 1 under … and three off of Sungjae Im’s lead.
Huge rally for him as he makes the turn into the second nine.
Dustin Johnson on the other hand going opposite direction with bogeys at 7 and 9.

Gravity is starting to ground some of the big-name stars who started hot in Round 2 on Friday. Jon Rahm with a bogey on No. 5 has dropped back to 1 under on the day. Dustin Johnson even on the round and 3 under for the week after dropping a stroke on No. 7. Collin Morikawa also back to even on his round. This course is really going to tighten up and play tough this afternoon, but already looking like it’s playing with plenty of bite.

World No. 14 Louis Oosthuizen has withdrawn from the 2022 Masters prior to the start of the second round, the Masters announced Friday ahead of his scheduled 1:41 p.m. ET tee time. Oosthuizen posted a 4-over 76 playing next to Tiger Woods and Joaquin Niemann on Thursday. The 2010 Open Championship winner has four career top-20 finishes at the Masters, including a runner-up finish to Bubba Watson in 2012.

Charl Schwartzel: Six straight missed cuts, no top 10s since last July. Absolutely no form whatsoever coming into this week. Currently T7. Golf is idiotic.

Big names making run in Round 2
After underwhelming showings in Round 1, Jon Rahm, Dustin Johnson, Collin Morikawa and Rory McIlroy are all in the red early in Round 2. Rahm pace of 2 under through four holes is best in the field thus far as he’s already erased the 2-over start to his week from Thursday.
Seems like the early wave today is out to try and be aggressive and score when possible. Afternoon in Augusta is expected to harden up the course and bring with it some nasty wind gusts that could affect play.
